UW–Madison Principal Investigators (PI’s) may contract with the CMS to monitor the progress of FDA-regulated, investigators-initiated clinical trials, and verify that the study is conducted, recorded, and reported in accordance with the protocol, standard operating procedures, and applicable regulatory requirements.

The Clinical Research Unit (CRU) is a 24/7 unit located in UW Hospital. The CRU serves investigator-initiated and industry studies in subject populations ages 13 and above.

The CRU has an RN research staff, a bionutritionist, and a sample processing lab. All nursing staff members are Advanced Cardiac Life Support- and chemotherapy-certified. The CRU has 15 inpatient-outpatient rooms, two outpatient rooms, and a four-bay outpatient treatment area.

A centralized service to assist investigators with registration, maintenance, and results reporting of applicable clinical trials, via ClinicalTrials.gov, as required by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA).

The FDA Regulated Research Oversight Program was created to promote and verify regulatory compliance.

Fiscal administration beginning with budget development, negotiation, and contract routing, through sponsor invoicing, collection, and fiscal reconciliation, ending with study closure.

Preparation of IRB submissions, including initial applications, protocol amendments, emergency use, continuing reviews, study completion, safety reports, and more.

Professional research staff adept at conducting feasibility assessments, recruiting and consenting participants, collecting data and specimens, completing case report forms, and more.

An entry portal for industry sponsors seeking to partner with our skilled clinicians, experienced research staff, and active patient populations.

Study integration is the process of looking at research and clinical activities wholistically and with a patient-centric lens.  It means bringing research to the patient rather than pulling a patient out of the clinic to go to research.  The Wisconsin Medicine Institute for Clinical Trials has specialists in the area of study integration and can help clinical trials improve workflows, enrollment, and retention by focusing on making research easy and integrated for patients and the teams caring for them.

A clinical research professional’s (CRP) practice is guided by one or more aspects of the principles of Good Clinical Practice (GCP).

CRPs may have backgrounds in nursing, pharmacy, medical technology, business administration, health record management, health administration, statistics, science, education, or other areas.

CRPs work in various settings, including private practice, cooperative research groups, public and private academic institutions, pharmaceutical, device, and biotechnology companies, Clinical Research Organizations (CROs), Site Management Organizations (SROs); independent research and development organizations, and organizations otherwise involved in management of clinical trials.
