UW Health/SMPH Research Operations Committee (UROC)

UW Health/SMPH Research Operations Committee (UROC)

UW Health and the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health (SMPH) created the UROC to help centralize and streamline the clinical trials review process at UW–Madison.

UROC provides a single intake and feasibility review process for all non-oncology clinical research requests prior to IRB submission. Oncology trials are still required to go through the UW Carbone Cancer Center’s Protocol Review and Monitoring Committee (PRMC).  The UROC review process begins with a proposal submission to the committee, which meets bi-weekly, and concludes with a recommendation letter and feasibility assessment.

All proposed trials that utilize UW Health services, personnel, facilities, and/or engage with UW Health patients need to undergo committee review to assess the operational feasibility of the study.

Factors to be considered by the committee include but are not limited to:

    • Alignment with UW Health/SMPH clinical research priorities
    • Impact on related infrastructure, ancillary services, and care teams
    • Availability of targeted patient populations and adequate recruitment plans
    • Number of studies competing for similar patient populations
    • Sufficient budget and funding sources to complete the trial

UROC is currently in pilot implementation and does not replace the SMPH Feasibility Attestation form. If nursing resources and support are required for research, the UW Health Nursing Intake Form for Research, per UW Health Policy 3.11, is still required.

While the goal of UROC is to streamline the feasibility review process, and eventually reduce and/or eliminate existing forms and processes, at this time, the current feasibility and request forms need to be submitted, along with completing the UROC review process.
