Meg Marie Hackbarth is a Clinical Research Coordinator II for the UW Clinical Trials Institute.

I arrived at my current position through a combination of relevant experience, continuous professional development, and networking within the industry, the institution and school. My over 20 years experience working within UW Health and the UW School of Medicine and Public Health has equipped me with the necessary expertise to contribute effectively to my role and support the organization’s goals.

WHAT MOTIVATIONS FUELED YOUR CAREER PATH?

My career path has been fueled by a passion for continuous learning, a commitment to making a positive impact, and the desire to solve complex challenges. Additionally, mentorship from experienced professionals and the opportunity to collaborate with diverse teams have significantly shaped my growth and drive in this field.

WHAT ARE SOME PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT TOOLS OR RESOURCES THAT YOU WOULD RECOMMEND TO OTHERS IN YOUR POSITION/FIELD?

I recommend utilizing platforms like LinkedIn Learning and Coursera for a wide range of courses tailored to our field. Additionally, participating in webinars and industry conferences can provide valuable networking opportunities and insights. Consider joining professional organizations that offer resources, mentorship, and access to exclusive industry publications for continuous growth.

HOW IS SUCCESS DEFINED IN YOUR FIELD?

Success in my field is defined by the ability to consistently meet and exceed participant and client expectations, deliver innovative solutions and contribute to the overall growth of the organization. It also involves fostering collaborative relationships, achieving measurable results, and maintaining a commitment to continuous improvement and professional development.

WHAT DO YOU LIKE MOST ABOUT YOUR ROLE? 

I appreciate the opportunity to contribute to a collaborative environment where innovative ideas thrive. My role allows me to engage with diverse teams, tackle challenging projects, and continuously develop my skills. This dynamic setting not only fosters personal growth but also drives the success of our collective goals.

WHAT ARE SOME CHALLENGES YOU FACE IN YOUR ROLE?

In my role, I encounter challenges such as managing tight deadlines while ensuring high-quality outcomes, adapting to rapidly changing project requirements, and fostering effective communication across diverse teams. These experiences, while demanding, provide opportunities for growth and innovation, ultimately enhancing my ability to contribute to our organizational goals.

Absolutely! I’ve been fortunate to have several mentors who have profoundly influenced my professional growth. They provided invaluable guidance, shared their experiences, and helped me navigate challenges. Their support and insights have not only shaped my skills but also inspired me to pursue my goals with confidence. I’m truly grateful for their impact.

I developed these relationships through consistent communication, active listening, and shared experiences. By being open and approachable, I fostered trust and understanding. Engaging in meaningful conversations and supporting each other during challenges helped strengthen our bonds, creating a network built on mutual respect and genuine connection.

WHAT DO YOU WISH YOU HAD KNOWN WHEN YOU STARTED YOUR CAREER PATH?

I wish I had known the importance of networking and building relationships early on. Connecting with others in my field has opened doors and provided invaluable support. Additionally, embracing failure as a learning opportunity would have eased the pressure I felt and encouraged me to take more risks.

WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR SOMEONE PURSUING A SIMILAR CAREER PATH TODAY?

To succeed in this career path, prioritizing continuous learning and adaptability. Network actively within the industry, seek mentorship, and stay informed about emerging trends. Emphasize developing both technical skills and soft skills, such as communication and teamwork, as they are essential for collaboration and leadership in any professional environment.

WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE PART ABOUT WORKING WITHIN THE UW CLINICAL RESEARCH COMMUNITY? 

My favorite part about working within UW’s clinical research community is the collaboration among the diverse professionals who are deeply committed to advancing healthcare. The supportive environment fosters innovation and learning, allowing us to make meaningful contributions to patient care and translate research findings into real-world applications. It is truly inspiring!
