21 Aug Howard Bailey’s legacy defined by compassion, ambition and hope
His mentor, Dr. Paul P. Carbone, the longtime director and namesake of UW Health | Carbone Cancer Center, convinced him to stay and grow at UW. As Bailey wraps up his 36-year career at Carbone Cancer Center, with nine years spent as its director, he reflects not only on his accomplishments but the center’s 50-year history as one of the first National Cancer Institute-designated comprehensive cancer centers.
During the most recent five-year review and funding renewal, Carbone was ranked as “outstanding” by reviewers from the NCI and peer cancer centers. Dr. Robert Golden, dean of the UW School of Medicine and Public Health, credits the nationally recognized excellence of Carbone to Bailey’s work ethic, compassion and desire to keep achieving new milestones.
